Sound of Noise is a Swedish foreign language film and a Scandinavian dark comedy classic.
The film focuses on a tone-deaf police officer working to stop a group of musicians from terrorizing the general public with musical acts of terror.
Sound of Noise is a very one of a kind film which brilliantly mixes the genres of comedy, crime, thriller and drama.
Synopsis
The film's main character Amadeus (yes, like Amadeus Motzart) is a cop for his local city who comes from a family of musicians.
He begins to investigate an ongoing streak of crimes to find out that a group of percussionists are terrorizing the city.
With his background in music, he takes it upon himself to find the culprits and stop the madness.
As the film goes on, we learn more about the 'band' criminals and learn about the obsessions both counterparts hold towards music.
Important Themes
As utterly entertaining and bizarre Sound of Noise sounds - (see what I did there), the film touches on a few topics revolving around music.
In today's society more and more youth are pushed towards careers in business, science and technology. And fewer and fewer of schools offer or specialize in the arts.
A 2017 Ranking of Art Schools finds that 7 out of the top 10 schools worldwide are in Europe. With the top European schools being The Royal College of Music, in London and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Moreover, statistics from British examination watchdogs Ofqual, show that the number of GCSE exams being taken in all performing arts have all fallen since last year. With entries for GCSEs in arts subjects falling by 46,000 this year.
Aside from participation statistics, the arts helps develop creativity and allows for many people to express their emotions and passions. The beautiful thing about the arts is that there are so many different avenues for people.
From fine art to fashion, musical therapy to contemporary dance; the arts help many find excellent careers with their individual passions. Many should recognize that a career in the arts is something that can be both full-filling and profitable. Not something that should be frowned upon.
After all what would life be if you didn't have music, film, poetry, literature, dance or culture? That would be tremendously boring. Many of us quite literally live for the arts.
You can survive working day by day as an accountant crunching numbers. But what's the point of that if when you go home you can't take a load off and indulge.
Conclusion
All in all, Sound of Noise may not have a deep narrative to it compared to other films I discuss, but it is a marvellous film nonetheless.
The film is undeniably hilarious and keeps you watching not knowing what to expect, cleverly balancing doses of mystery and thriller.
Definitely give it a watch because it is a film unlike any other. With one of the most distinct and unique storylines you will ever find or hear about for that matter. (Okay I promise no more sound jokes, but I had to).
