Veloce come il Vento (Italian Race) - (2016)

Italian Race 2016 Film Review

Veloce come il Vento is an Italian foreign language film about two siblings taking on the Italian Gran Turismo racing circuit.

The film recounts a story which details the importance of perseverance, determination, focus and family.

Veloce come il Vento follows the story of Giulia who is a young and talented driver with big aspirations.

With a promising career ahead of her, Giulia's life is thrown into turmoil when her father dies. With the news of his passing Giulia's estranged step-brother makes a return into her life.

The film touches on their troubled relationship as Giulia tries to keep her career afloat and provide for her dysfunctional family.

Synopsis

Most athletes work for years to make it big. They train hard, keep strict schedules and can tell you a story or two about facing adversity.

Veloce come il Vento tells of such a narrative through Giulia and her estranged brother, Loris.

Both Giulia and Loris are in different stages of their lives, but bond through racing.

Giulia learns that Loris used to be her a decade ago. He was the "golden boy" of the GT circuit in his younger years before disappearing from the scene.

Struggling with a drug addiction Loris attempts to reconnect with his sister playing a role as an older brother, father figure and coach.

Important Themes

Veloce come il Vento touches on much more than simply racing.

Like many coaches and mentors, Loris sees a lot of himself in Giulia. As a result he wants her to succeed and reach her potential where he had failed.

Additionally the film touches on the problems many go through with drug abuse.

A 2014 report from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction details that there are 203,000 high-risk opioid users in Italy. Furthermore, 1 in 10 adults in Italy are long-term drug injectors or regularly use opioids, cocaine or amphetamines.

Additionally, Veloce come il Vento deals with the trials and tribulations of a broken family. Family is the most important thing in many cultures including Italian (as many with Italian heritage can vouch for).

The dynamic between Giulia and Loris is something between love and hate.

But family is there to support you through the thick and thin at all times.

This ties into the racing world rather well, as behind every driver is a close-knit, supportive pit crew and team.

Conclusion

Veloce come il Vento is a story about following your passions with a good balance between order and passion.

Passion is the strongest motivator in life. It's not an easy thing to find, but if you have what it takes nothing should be able to stop you on your way to greatness.

Veloce come il Vento (which translates to "Fast as the Wind" in English) quite poetically describes the wicked twists and turns on life's race track.

It is a film that can resonate with many, not just your typical racing fan.

But I suppose that is the beauty about racing. People come out to experience the show in it's total grandeur.

The food, drink, bright lights, adrenaline and cars that move as fast as the wind.
