The Paradise Suite 2015 film review

The Paradise Suite is a multi-language film that follows six immigrants whose lives all intertwine with one another in Amsterdam.

The film includes dialogue in Dutch, French, English, Swedish, Bulgarian, Bosnian and Serbian.

The Paradise Suite touches on many real world themes revolving around the countless hardships, abuse and neglect refugees deal with while living in large European cities.

The film also highlights the ever-present dangers of human trafficking and exploitation seen across the continent.

Synopsis

The Paradise Suite follows the lives of six immigrants. Each of whom come from different backgrounds; speak different languages and each find themselves in Amsterdam for different reasons.

Without giving too much away, I suppose you could compare the film to the American produced film Crash. As both films’ characters stories intertwine in a similar fashion.

Some of the characters we are introduced to are an aspiring model from Bulgaria, a guest worker from West Africa, a Bosnian office clerk and a Swedish orchestra conductor.

Each of the characters deal with their own personal issues, which ultimately lead to the characters lives intertwining. Making for very telling, revealing and dramatic outcomes.

The Paradise Suite packs a heavy dosage of emotion mixed with stark realities. The film allows for an array of poignant truths to be revealed through its characters. Making for an emotional and intimate story about overcoming extreme difficulties.

Important Themes

The Paradise Suite sheds light on a host of issues that affect refugees living in Europe.

Today large cities around Europe are seeing an influx of refugees fleeing from persecution, exploitation and abuse from countries in Asia and Africa. Because of these circumstances, a vast majority of said people leave their homes with relatively nothing or any concrete plans for the future.

Due to the nature of politics today, the refugee calamity has received both positive and negative sentiment across the world. The issue has become very political with many people holding onto biases based on race, religion and caste.

Whether you are for or against aiding refugees, it has become a very polarising stance to have these days. It continues to be very concerning since countries like the United States, the United Kingdom and Austria have elected political parties are in favour of blocking borders for those seeking political asylum.

Moreover, since so many people are desperate to leave their old homes with hopes of better lives in the West, human trafficking and exploitation of refugees has become even more prevalent.

Statistics from the European Commission state that there were over 15,800 reported victims of human trafficking between 2013 and 2014.

Said EU Human Trafficking Report states that 76% of all victims were women and young girls. Noting that two out of every three registered victims (67%) were trafficked for sexual exploitation, 21% for forced labour and 12% for other reasons including organ removal and domestic servitude.

It is clear to see that these horrible black-market industries thrive off the exploitation of refugees and stateless people. As time passes the refugee calamity is worsening and so with it the concerns that more people are being forced into inhumane conditions.

Conclusion

As a whole The Paradise Suite is an incredible film. It follows a very emotional and intricate narrative riddled with hard truths.

The film beautifully depicts the personal difficulties its characters have to fight through. While shedding light on a very concerning issue not many people in broad society want to concentrate on. Some even call it a 'shameful' practice.

It’s 2018 now and people still ignore the injustice dealt to hundreds of thousands of people. The Paradise Suite does a phenomenal job touching on this aspect of society as it explores an amazingly written storyline.

Be sure to watch The Paradise Suite. It is truly an utter masterpiece.
